Cambodia country information: Volunteer work in Cambodia

Cambodia, formerly known as Kampuchea, is a country in Southeast Asia bordered by Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. Cambodia's population of about 14 million is made up almost entirely of ethnic Khmers, though there are also ethnic Chinese, Vietnamese, and hill tribe peoples. Cambodia's population and geography have been heavily influenced by the Mekong River and by Tonlé Sap, a large freshwater lake which has played a great role in Cambodia's history and economy.

Cambodia is a country that conjures different thoughts in different people's minds. Some people think of the amazing temples of Angkor while others think of the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge. Indeed, Cambodia has had a long and often troubled history. Ever since the fall of the Khmer Empire in the 1400s Cambodia has faced attacks, colonization, heavy carpet bombing by the US in the early 1970s, and the reign of terror carried out by the Khmer Rouge beginning in 1975 and ending only in the 1990s. Cambodia's history has severely impacted the country's economy and today many Cambodians remain weighed down by poverty. Fifty percent of the country's population is under the age of 22. Almost all of the country's qualified teachers and doctors were executed by the Khmer Rouge. Landmines and unexploded bombs have left a large number of adults and children, especially from villages, maimed and disable for life if not killed outright. Furthermore, the growing problem of AIDS has left many children orphaned. All this leaves a big void in the areas of education, child care, and healthcare. Cambodia is in great need of overseas volunteers.

As our volunteer in Cambodia, you will have the opportunity to teach English in or near Battambang or Siem Reap (near Angkor Wat). You can volunteer at an orphan home in Battambang and at village schools outside of Siem Reap.
