English is the major second language around the world and one of the main gateways to information, to being able to learn online and to better jobs. Being able to speak English empowers poor people to take control of their lives.
Volunteers teach basic English to poor students and adults. We believe in activity-based learning instead of the usual rote learning traditionally practiced in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Nepal. We train volunteers in this method of teaching at our Volunteer & Cross Cultural Training.
Where education resources are scarce, IT can be the poor man's best friend to gaining knowledge and education. But young students need help getting started with computers.
Openmind Projects and its volunteers help children learn to use computers and the internet through our demonstrate-explore-discover method.
Volunteers take on different tasks depending on skills and the needs of each project. Work may include: teaching English to local guides and villagers, designing brochures and websites, building trails, participating in wildlife surveys and raising awareness of the benefits of ecotourism in the community.
Openmind Projects works with Thai national parks and marine centers to protect threatened marine life and environments. The main objectives are to rehabilitate and preserve Thailand's coral reefs, marine ecosystems and mangrove forests. We work to promote responsible and sustainable community-based ecotourism and raise local awareness.
Volunteer work may be seasonal and depends on the needs of each project and the experience of the volunteer. Tasks may include assisting in marine surveys (which may involve scuba diving), preparing documentation, clean-up work and teaching English.
Some 200,000 refugees and over 200,000 migrant workers from Burma have settled along the border in west Thailand. Forced to abandon their homes they now live in poor conditions and face an uncertain future. Since many hope one day to return to their homes, some schools in the area use the Burmese curriculum instead of the Thai. This makes it difficult for them to get Thai government support.
Openmind Projects sends volunteers to orphan homes and schools, where they teach English and IT or care for young children. We donate computers to schools and children's homes, and we invite young people from the border areas as trainees to our Training Center in Thailand.
Child and health care volunteers contribute to better care for both children and adults, and help improve English skills of the staff and children. Qualified volunteers bring experience and skills to supplement those of the staff in health care centers and hospitals.
Without good health and child care people cannot learn. Without education job opportunities remain limited. Poor health impedes personal growth and drains resources from those around them. Openmind Projects focuses on education.
Openmind Projects runs camps during Thailand holidays in October and April. Hosted mainly at our Training Center in Thailand. In Laos during June - August.. The camps foucs on English, IT, Internet, creative and thinking, learning skills and to increase environmental awareness.
Students are invited from Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia and come from poor backgrounds.
Overseas volunteers are invited to prepare each camp and then to the training and social activities during the camps. Each camp ends with a great party to show skills learned!
Since our income goes almost entirely towards supporting our projects and local staff, we are reliant on volunteers' skills and experience to help us run and develop Openmind Projects. While we gain your knowledge and expertise, you have a fantastic opportunity for personal development and to experience a new culture and way of working.
We are particularly looking for volunteers who can help us with IT support or teaching and learning development, as well as general promotion and administration tasks.
